Fertility Versus Attractiveness

In a recent study, University of Oxford found that ugly men release more sperm during sex. This means that women who want to get pregnant may increase their chances of conceiving if they find themselves an ugly partner.

The theory goes something like this. Attractive men are more likely to mate more often. Their bodies somehow know this, so they produce less sperm per ejaculation in an attempt to “save” some for the next event. In this manner, they are able to increase their chances of successfully mating with as many partners as possible.

Ther article is really more geared towards animals than humans, so it’s a bit sensationalistic to say it applies to men and women. But I think it’s an interesting concept.

I’d like to see the study redone on male humans to see if it holds true!

Irresistable Guys

I recently read a story on the 7 Types of Guys Women Can’t Resist. I thought it was pretty interesting. In summary…

1) Romantic guys who show their appreciation with romantic gestures like bringing her flowers or chocolates, or just calling her.
2) Confident guys who are very sure of themselves and do not seek the approval of their woman. These guys tent to put out a sense of power and control that many women are attracted to.
3) Artistic guys tend to interest women due to their sensitivity and their creativity.
4) Foreign guys always seem to have a leg up on the competition. Their worldly nature seems to blend with charm and charisma to be very enticing to many ladies.
5) We all know bad boys are a secret passion for many women. It’s the sense of not easily being controlled, the challenge of taming him that may be the driver.
6) Intelligence believe it or not is a huge turn on for many women. The intellectual stimulation many times leads to a physical connection. Making these connections permanent leads to love!
7) Considerate guys do tend to win many hearts. It is difficult to juxtapose this with the “bad boy”, but who said women have to be logical or make sense?

Ipilimumab MDX-010 for Prostate Cancer

We have discussed a few things about prostate cancer before. Recently, two patients at the Mayo clinic who had what was considered to be inoperable prostate cancer were cured when given a drug called ipilimumab, also known as MDX-010. The tumors in these patients were too large to operate on, and had grown into the abdominal region. The drug was used with a standard hormone treatment and radiation therapy. The tumors shrank dramatically, and surgery was subsequently possible.

Ipilmumab is an antibody, and when given after androgen ablation (which removes testosterone) it builds on the anti-tumor activity of the hormone. Both patients experienced consistent drops in their PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels.

Doctors are calling this the holy grail of prostate cancer research, and a tremendous amount of hope is being placed on the possibilities for the new treatment.

NSA Spies on You

I’m all for the government tracking down terrorists and keeping them from ruining my day. Hey, if they can figure out who they are just gather them all up and stick them in a dungeion somewhere. But I am not a terrorist, and you are not a terrorist, so they should leave us alone, right?

A guy named Russell Tice who is a former analyst at the National Security Agency (NSA) recently blew the whistel on exactly what has been going the last few years. The NSA has been building an enormous database that cross-references credit card transactions with wiretap data. Warrantless wiretapping has been a big debate. So how did/does the NSA get all this data.

It seems clear that credit card companies and banks handed data over to the government just as telecommunication companies did. Let me rephrase that - they handed your data over to the government. After all, the data is about you right?

Remember the secret room in the AT&T building in Missouri where we think the NSA set up a data mining operation? There was one in San Francisco too. There are probably rooms like that all over North America, not to mention data feeds that are being taken off of satellites. It is sort of chuckled about these days, but apparently when Kerry almost won the election in 2004, the guys at NSA who knew they were breaking the law, were extremely nervous that they would be tossed in jail if Bush were to leave the White House.

Running a Test

I picked up a new multi-user plugin from Harley, and I’m about to try it out. If I break my stuff, you guys just stand back and gasp, okay? lol

I’m not sure what we’ll do with the future of this blog, but I think it would be cool to have a huge collection of stories from a multitude of people.
